Stopping distances explained

Video coming soon

The key ideas and the summary sheet for this lesson are ready now.

Key ideas

  1. Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance.

  2. Tiredness, drugs, alcohol and distractions increase reaction time and so thinking distance.

  3. Wet or icy roads and worn brakes or tyres increase braking distance.

  4. At higher speeds both distances grow, and braking distance grows fastest.
