Key ideas
Irradiation = exposure to radiation; the object does not become radioactive.
Contamination = radioactive atoms get on or into something and keep decaying.
Outside the body alpha is least dangerous; inside it is most dangerous.
Distance, shielding and less time reduce exposure; they never make it zero.
