Key ideas

  1. All EM waves are transverse and travel at the same speed in a vacuum or air.

  2. In order of increasing frequency: radio, microwaves, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays.

  3. Along the spectrum, wavelength gets shorter as frequency gets higher.

  4. EM waves transfer energy from a source to an absorber; our eyes detect only visible light.
