Key ideas

  1. Radio waves: TV and radio. Microwaves: satellite communications and cooking food.

  2. Infrared: electric heaters, cooking food and infrared cameras. Visible light: fibre optic communications.

  3. Ultraviolet: energy-efficient lamps and sun tanning. X-rays and gamma rays: medical imaging and treatments.

  4. Higher: link a property of the wave to the use, e.g. X-rays pass through soft tissue but are absorbed by bone.
